How to Pair East Meets West

Growing up, I was fascinated by the stark contrast between the clothes I wore as a child to weddings and Eid parties, and the simple “Western” clothes, i.e. jeans and t-shirts (as I saw it then), and the overlap that slowly developed as the worlds grew into each other to coexist in simplistic, yet intricate beauty. As the fashion industry takes from varying cultures and styling practices, it is mesmerizing to see what elements a designer takes from centuries old design practices, sometimes for functional elements, and other times purely for aesthetic appeal. Thanks to today's seemingly endless means of communication and information sharing, there is nothing that cannot be found, learnt, imitated, and adapted to a creative’s keen style eye. Growing up in several countries, this has always been something I have done, whether it be a man’s thobe from Saudi Arabia worn with pants as a shalwar kameez, or a knee length lace dress from Tibi paired with hand stitched made to order pants from Pakistan. Occasionally, I'll throw on a duppatta [scarf], depending on where I am going.

At Victoria Road, we search for beautiful, ethically produced products, created from centuries old techniques. We source directly from designers and artisans in emerging economies worldwide and provide them with sustainable access to the U.S. marketplace. We are inspired by global design, but lately we have been transfixed by the cultural fusion that manifests in the fashion of Southeast Asia.

Pakistan Fashion Week 2015 recently came to an end, and after scouring the stunning works of both new and classic designers, I found the work of Nida Azwer to be the perfect mix of cultures and style. Her pieces can easily be worn anywhere in the world. See below my ideas on how to style them.

A big thank you to the amazing Tapu Javeri for all the photos!

This outfit is perfect as is! The full outfit would pair beautifully with a pair of open toed stacked heels, and beach tresses. Makeup should be kept simple with eyeliner above the eye (not below), and a pair of small earrings to let the outfit and neckline speak for itself. Add the Crown Cuff by Rema to really add some edge to the outfit. Wear it on your wrist or as shown below on our lovely model, Meki.

The work in this top is beautiful and the details can speak for themselves when paired with a pair of wide legged, high waisted off white chiffon pants. Pair with wedges (for comfort reasons) and purchase a pair of pants long enough to cover to create a longer silhouette. Hair can be parted on the side and pinned up in a side chignon or low bun. Pair this outfit with our Gold Jeweled Ear Cuff from the Shalimar Collection and you are ready to go! Perfect for a gala or a sit down dinner.

The detailing and work on this top is perfectly on trend and in line with high fashion right now. It could be work with a high waisted mid calf length skirt in a beige or any of the colors from the top. I would stick a to a neoprene fabric for the skirt, or even an organza style skirt for a fancier event. I love the midriff showing, but think it should just be a peek to keep it suitable for all occasions. A high ponytail, paired with the Pearl Tale Ear Cuff in blue or white by Rema is the perfect mix to keep it classic and fashion forward. Pair with flats for a daytime event, or with simple nude heels as seen here to create the illusion of long legs (if you don’t already have them)!

This is a beautiful modern take on a sari, and I would wear it as is for the right occasion. Never be afraid to fully embrace the ethnic look when the right occasion calls for it, such as a black tie gala or an outdoor wedding. If you want to keep the look more simple, then take this intricate top and pair with some simple high-waisted pants, and grab the Jeweled Clutch from the Shalimar Collection to really push it to another level!
